Turning Trash to Treasure in your Garden for Free

One way to create a lush and beautiful garden for plants and vegetables is to compost.

Compost returns nutrients to the soil, such as phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and many trace minerals, which are slowly released and contribute to healthy plant growth.

Compost is a natural fertilizer.

Compost suppresses weed growth and the improved soil condition makes it more difficult for weeds to anchor roots.

Compost increases water retention.

Compost helps reduce soil diseases.

Composting is not quite as simple as just throwing your fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, dried leaves and eggshells in a pile. It takes a little serious management so you don’t just create a new feeding place for unwanted animals.

RecyleSmart offers video’s, workshops and the tools you need to get started. Or if you are well intentioned – but lazy like me you can register and pick up 50 lbs. of compost completely free at the RecylceSmart Annual Compost Giveaway April 27th.

Compost is available to residents of Danville, Walnut Creek, Alamo, Blackhawk and Diablo April 27th at Heather Farms. But you must register in advance. To register copy and paste this link https://www.recyclesmart.org/icaw/ and follow instructions.

This helpful information was brought to you by the Blackhawk Bloomers. If you would like to learn more or become a member of this fantastic organization, please contact Maria Knutson at m.knutson@comcast.net.
