Meet Tom Loarie: A Mentor, Innovator and Communicator at Heart

Blackhawk’s very own Tom Loarie is a man of many talents, whose journey from Chicago’s vibrant media legacy to healthcare innovation and global mentorship reflects a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service. For over four decades, Tom has worn multiple hats healthcare executive, entrepreneur, mentor, and radio host—with an unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact.

Born and raised in Chicago, Tom grew up surrounded by stories and communication. His father, Willard J. Loarie, was the Executive Vice President of J. Walter Thompson, the world’s largest advertising firm of its time, and his grandfather, Richard J. Finnegan, served as the Executive Editor of the Chicago Sun-Times. This familial legacy instilled in Tom a passion for effective communication and storytelling, which became central to his life and career. While his mother hoped he’d follow in her journalistic footsteps, Tom charted his own course by pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, eventually bridging his technical expertise with entrepreneurial innovation.

Tom’s career began in aerospace engineering before he transitioned to healthcare, joining American Hospital Supply Corporation (now Baxter). Over the next 13 years, he revitalized 13 U.S. and international operations, culminating in his leadership of Heyer-Schulte, a division specializing in medical implants. Under his guidance, the division achieved record profitability, a testament to Tom’s strategic and operational prowess.

In the mid-1980s, Tom was recruited by venture capitalist Tom Perkins to lead Kleiner Perkins’ first medical technology investment. This marked the start of a groundbreaking era in healthcare innovation. Over the years, Tom has raised over $400 million and brought more than 20 cutting-edge products to market, including KeraVision’s INTACS®, a vision- correction technology celebrated as one of CNN’s top medical breakthroughs of 1999. His work in healthcare innovation has impacted countless lives, bringing transformative technologies to patients in need and setting new standards in medical advancements.

Tom’s entrepreneurial journey was not without challenges. Leading early-stage companies required not only a vision but also resilience in the face of uncertainty. “Building something from the ground up is both rewarding and demanding,” Tom shares. “You have to wear many hats, adapt quickly, and remain steadfast in your mission.” This mindset allowed him to thrive in high-stakes environments, forging a legacy of leadership and innovation.

Beyond the Boardroom: A Life of
Mentorship and Learning
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom has always been a mentor at heart. He has served on advisory boards for leading organizations such as Enterprise Ireland and UCSF’s Rosenman Institute, as well as lectured at institutions like UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and Creighton University Medical School.

Tom’s commitment to mentoring extends to his local community. He co-directed a career transition ministry at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville, which has assisted over 6,000 individuals in navigating career changes and finding new opportunities. As Program Director for Catholics@Work, he curated a speaker series that inspired professionals to integrate their values with their careers. These initiatives reflect Tom’s belief that mentorship is not only about guidance but also about fostering connections and supporting others in their growth.

A lifelong learner, Tom has also written more than 1,000 book reviews on Amazon, focusing on topics like leadership, innovation, and personal growth. This passion for reading and sharing knowledge earned him recognition as a top-500 reviewer. “Books are a window into the minds of great thinkers,” Tom explains. “Through them, we can explore new ideas and perspectives that enrich our understanding of the world.”
