Halloween Inspired Craft for October

Have you heard of Booing? Booing is a Halloween tradition that started back in the 80’s in which you surprise a neighbor with Halloween treats during the month leading up to the holiday.

It started with families sneaking treats onto neighbors’ porches after dark with a note attached saying “You’ve Been Booed”. The idea is to spread excitement leading up to Halloween, if you receive a “You’ve Been Booed” treat, then there is a note included with instructions to pay it forward. It’s all done in the name of fun and gets a buzz of excitement started in the neighborhood.

Booing usually begins in late September and ends Halloween night. Booing originated in the United States and occurs in pockets all over the country. Other names for the practice include “Ghosting”, “Spooking”, “Hobgoblin”, and “The Phantom” depending on where you live, and it occurs in neighborhoods, in offices, and in nursing homes.

There are a plethora of ideas on Instagram at #youvebeenbooed Pinterest is chock full of ideas for this craft too. There are an endless number of printables to choose from. I think it would be fun to give cut-out sugar cookies in Halloween shapes, a S’mores kit, a caramel apple kit, treats for the pets, or (the traditional) a bunch of candy. If you want to stay away from candy, you could include a book, bubbles, a small pumpkin, or a small craft. Make it as unique or as simple as you like.

Decorate a bag, bucket, mug or any item that can hold goodies. Get the kids involved in decorating it.

There is also the adult version, “You’ve Been BOOzed!” for those families that no longer have younger children in the household. You can find inspiration on Instagram at #youvebeenboozed for this idea. Getting BOOzed usually consists of a bottle of wine adorned in Halloween garb.

I hope you’ll join me in the fun!

Happy October!
