A local mixologist and tequila aficionado, Fernando Aguayo opened Choza Tacos y Cantina in Portland, Oregon in October 2018. Finding the restaurant successful, he returned to his home town and opened his second location in the beautiful Blackhawk Plaza with the best patio this side of Las Vegas. Nestled in right next to the water makes it a beautiful setting to enjoy a meal.
Opened during Covid with outdoor dining only and no budget for advertising, the restaurant quickly became well known for it’s outstanding and authentic Mexican food and equally outstanding margarita selection. The food is prepped daily with the freshest and local ingredients.
Instead of making their mix using lime juice and agave, Fernando’s mix is made from scratch using blood oranges, oranges, lemons, limes and a few other secret ingredients. All of this gives the mix not only a unique color but flavor as well. Choza also does not carry mainstream tequilas, all are small batch, 100% agave and of the best quality. Fernando himself has over 400 bottles in his private selection at home. Fernando’s popularity among locals allowed him to staff with mostly friends and family giving it that true homespun feeling.
As we look forward to 2021 being an improvement, we are upgrading our menu. Look for improvements on our current selections along with a few additions such as our New York steak served Tampiqueña style and our Camarones Mojo de Ajo. Both of these are sure to be a crowd pleaser!
