During the Superbowl a friend went to grab a beer out of my refrigerator and came back to me Io tell me I was wasting the most valuable space in my fridge by storing beer in the crisper. It got me thinking, what is the purpose of those drawers? Come to find out they’re actually meant for fresh produce and when used correctly can extend the life of your fruits and vegetables.
The crisper drawer can control the humidity which is the amount of air flowing in and out. Shutting the vent shuts out air and produces more humidity – opening the vents allows air to flow more freely. If your drawers don’t have any controls, they are high humidity crispers. So, what goes where? High humidity drawers should contain thin– skinned or leafy vegetables that can lose moisture quickly and wilt. Think herbs, lettuce, asparagus. The low humidity drawer is best for fruits such as apples, pears and stone fruits. Note: never store potatoes with apples as apples produce high levels of ethylene gas which causes potatoes to spoil prematurely.
Now the question is where do I put my beer?
